The following is a list of Maori names of plants assembled with many Maori names of trees and shrubs defined in general terms only. It is often doubtful which names are limited to single species, and some were used in a generic sense, for example Tataramoa for several species of Tataramoa. Engari ko te mea nui , kua tu ke tenei whare....... mo tatau nga Iwi katoa o te motu. Nga Mihi

Crop plants and weeds introduced by settlers are not included here. Plants cultivated in pre-European times, like taro, gourd and sweet potato, are but only to the terms most generally applied to them. The plant species mentioned are of special importance to Maori and are known under different names consisting of several words, with or without hyphens and some descriptive phrases are used rather than true names. A lot of these plants have been utilized in recipes in this website and some are huge favorites still used today

SUMMARY
Kia ora whanau, the names of our plants and tree's are placed here for your reference. Many of them will be used in video demonstrations in other sections of this website to demonstrate how they are picked, harvested, prepared, cooked and served at the table by whanau. Many people have contributed to this kaupapa and many more will be added in the future. If you want to contribute to our work please leave your comments in our guest booked at the top of this page. I'm sure many whanau will appreciate it.
This list is not final because there are other names not on this list that other Iwi know some of these plants by. Why because some
whanau refused to part with their knowledge and held this knowledge within their tribal vaults. Ngai Tuhoe was notorious for this and rightly so....
Many whanau are committed to our work and their input will be shared across the website in the future. The video and audio will also include many recipes, work methods, karakia and songs relative to these plants. Nga Mihi Click here to go to the library
